What is a custom packaging mold?
A custom packaging mold is tooling developed to manufacture a bottle, jar, closure or other packaging component with geometry created for a specific packaging program rather than relying solely on an existing stock mold.

When should I consider a custom mold?
Custom mold development may be appropriate when existing packaging cannot provide the required shape, capacity, functionality, component integration, structural features or package differentiation.
What types of packaging can be custom molded?

Do You Really Need a Completely Custom Package?
Sometimes the best solution combines existing components with strategically developed custom tooling.
Do I have to choose between completely stock or completely custom packaging?
No. A hybrid approach can combine stock and custom components. This may provide a distinctive package without requiring every component to be developed from scratch.

Can I use a custom bottle with a stock closure?
Yes. A custom bottle can be designed around an appropriate existing closure, pump, sprayer or dispensing component when the component meets the project's design and functional requirements.
Can I use a stock bottle with a custom closure?
Yes. A stock bottle or jar can be paired with a custom closure or specialty component to create a more distinctive package or add functionality without developing a new container mold.
Can an existing mold be used instead of building a new one?
Potentially. If existing tooling meets the package, manufacturing and performance requirements, it may provide an alternative to completely new mold development.

From Package Concept to Approved Design
Engineering helps translate the desired package into a solution that can move toward tooling and production.
What information is needed to start a custom mold project?
Helpful information can include the product being packaged, desired capacity, package type, material preferences, desired shape, neck finish, closure or dispensing requirements, functional requirements, production needs and target launch timing.
Existing samples, sketches, drawings or CAD files can also be helpful when available.
What are Final Revision Drawings?
Final Revision Drawings are the approved technical drawings used to confirm the package design before custom mold manufacturing proceeds.
Can a custom bottle be engineered around a specific closure or dispensing system?
Yes. Package engineering can evaluate the container and closure or dispensing component as a complete system. Neck finish, component interface, package geometry and functional requirements should be considered together.

How long does a custom mold take?
There is no single standard timeline for every custom packaging mold. Timing depends on package complexity, engineering requirements, approvals, tooling configuration, manufacturing, sampling, revisions and production requirements.

What happens before a custom mold is manufactured?
Before tooling begins, a project may move through concept development, engineering review, package drawings, initial pricing, customer approval, Final Revision Drawings, internal approval and purchasing.

What happens after the custom mold is finished?
Mold completion is not necessarily the end of development. Engineering samples may be produced and reviewed before production approval. The project can then move toward commercial production and launch.
Can samples or design revisions extend the development timeline?
Yes. Engineering samples provide an opportunity to evaluate the package produced from the tooling. If changes are required, additional engineering, mold modifications, sampling or review may be needed before production approval.

What is mold cavitation?
Cavitation refers to the number of cavities within a mold that produce parts during the manufacturing cycle. Cavitation requirements are determined as part of the tooling and production strategy.
Can a family mold or existing mold reduce the amount of new tooling required?
Potentially. Existing tooling may eliminate the need for a completely new mold when it meets the project requirements. A family mold may also reduce duplicate tooling when multiple compatible package sizes can share a common mold base with interchangeable inserts.
Who Owns and Maintains Custom Tooling?
Ownership, usage rights, exclusivity and physical custody should be clearly defined for each tooling arrangement.
Who owns a custom packaging mold?
Ownership depends on the tooling agreement for the individual project. A mold may be customer-owned, Empire-owned, exclusive, restricted, shared, licensed or subject to another agreed commercial arrangement.

If I pay for a mold, do I automatically own it?
Funding tooling does not by itself define every ownership, exclusivity, usage or transfer right. Those terms should be confirmed in the applicable tooling and commercial agreement.
Can a custom mold be moved to another manufacturer?
Transfer may be possible depending on ownership rights, contractual terms, tooling condition and compatibility with the receiving manufacturing equipment and process.
Who maintains and repairs a custom mold?
Maintenance and repair responsibilities depend on the tooling and manufacturing agreement. Routine maintenance, wear, repairs and modifications should be addressed as part of the individual program.
Can someone else use my custom mold?
That depends on the ownership, usage and exclusivity terms associated with the tooling. Some molds may be exclusive, while others may be restricted, shared or licensed for defined uses.
