What Is Downcycling in Packaging?
Downcycling occurs when recovered material is recycled into a different product or application that generally has lower material-performance requirements than the original use.
For example, plastic from a rigid package might be mechanically recycled and later used in a durable product, construction material or another application rather than returning to the same type of packaging.
Downcycling can still keep material in productive use and reduce immediate disposal, but the material may move farther away from its original application over successive cycles.
